Global steel mills hit lowest operating rate in two years in November

According to statistics from the International Steel Association (worldsteel), the crude steel production of 64 major steel producing countries and regions worldwide in November was 115.5 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.1% and a month on month decrease of 6.4%. The daily average global crude steel production in November was 3.85 million tons, a decrease of 3.3% compared to the previous month, reaching the lowest level since the beginning of this year.


In November, the crude steel production of the 27 EU countries was 14.24 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 2.1% and a month on month decrease of 6.1%; The crude steel production of the Commonwealth of Independent States was 9.14 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 3.1% and a month on month decrease of 3.7%; The crude steel production in North America was 9.89 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 12.2% and a month on month increase of 0.3%; The crude steel production in South America was 3.88 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.5% and a month on month decrease of 4.5%; The crude steel production in Asia was 72.1 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.1% and a month on month decrease of 7.8%.


The statistics also show that from January to November this year, the total crude steel production of 64 major steel producing countries and regions worldwide was 1.373 billion tons, a year-on-year increase of 7.4%. From January to November, the crude steel production of the 27 EU countries was 165 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.1%; The crude steel production of the Commonwealth of Independent States was 103 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.3%; The crude steel production in North America was 109 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 6.6%; The crude steel production in South America was 44.8 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 10.8%; The crude steel production in Asia was 879 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.7%.


In November, the crude steel output of Chinese Mainland was 49.88 million tons, down 0.2% year on year and 8.8% month on month, down for three consecutive months. According to preliminary statistics from my steel website, the proportion of production cuts by Chinese steel mills continued to expand in December, with a significant reduction in sheet metal production and a greater reduction in construction steel production. After deducting China, the global crude steel production in November was 65.62 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 2.2% and a month on month decrease of 4.6%.


The overall operating rate of global steel mills in November was 73.4%, a decrease of about 2.8 percentage points from October and 2.6 percentage points from November last year, the lowest level in two years. In December, some foreign steel markets hit bottom and rebounded, but the production reduction efforts of steel mills in most regions have not weakened.
